Sara Strother- Blue Goat Ceramics

Blue Goat Ceramics

Function Ware & The Occasional Blue Goat

My work explores an ever-broadening range of functional wares and acrylic painting. In college I worked primarily as a painter. I left my first teaching job to take a public high school position primarily teaching ceramics. That move heavily influenced my own art making. I suddenly discovered a love a clay- the meditative qualities of wheel throwing and the practical nature of functional ware. My most current work has evolved from traditional functional ware including bowls and mugs towards earrings.  I love the idea of people being able to wear small sculptures whenever they want, carrying art with them wherever they go.

Blue Goat got its name from the door of my room in college. In an elaborate practice of procrastination I painted a colorful tree complete with some birds and a goat. The goat was the freest making I'd experienced while earning my BFA. When I graduated I reflected on what I wanted to make and began exploring more goats. They were different from the highly conceptually, post-modern works I had been surrounded by in college. Goats were a freeing festival of color!

Fast-forward to now and I've found that I desire to make accessible works for all. My goats and other animals are easily digestible and my variety of ceramic work is wearable and functional- art for everyday!
